| VIII. Keth might have screamed as well. He didn't know. His mind and senses were still reeling. One moment there had been calm, now squid-men surged across the deck atop clusters of writhing, sinuous tentacles. Black coral blades glistened in their hands.
The boy's cutlass trembled. Three of the creatures undulated towards him, their movements hypnotic and chilling, and he knew that he would die. "Get away from him, you slimy bastards!" Ethel's stock form barged past, knocking him aside. Her cutlass flashed and buried itself in a sleek white chest. The sailorwoman's powerful arm grabbed another monster around the neck. She staggered across the deck, wrapped in grasping tentacles, grappling with all three as she cut and hacked. Her eyes met Keth's. Then the four of them toppled over the side. Keth ran to the rail. That was wen the shadow fell, and something blotted out the sun. | |
