Lore
It's been centuries since the masses overthrew Creon the Tyrant and hacked him to pieces. Annual festivities still take place in his former heartland to commemorate that event, but they've long since become a general celebration of freedom and liberty. Many revelers aren't even aware of the historical episode which spawned their present merrymaking. |
Fireworks from Nine Rivers are launched at the sky, and explode in great multicolored detonations that illuminate the darkness. These represent the alchemical bombs once thrown at Creon's guards.
The first time they were fired, it's said the gods believed mortals were waging war on heaven -- and hurled down lightning bolts in retaliation. |
Revelers often paint or embroider stars onto their clothing. But most are unaware of the symbol's significance, which dates back to the uprising. Creon supposedly said that his tyranny would last as long as the stars in the sky. Whether he ever really uttered those words, the rebels cited and spread them as an example of his megalomaniacal insanity.
During the ensuing battles, they wore stars as badges of their rebellion, and declared that the celestial jewels had descended from heaven to witness Creon's destruction. |
Dubious sources claim Creon forbade the consumption of alcohol, because he wanted it all for himself. Hence beer flows like water at the festival. Those who favor temperance say this is just a flimsy excuse for excess and drunkenness, but they usually shut up after inebriated revelers punch them a few times. |
Three colors tend to dominate the festivities, each with its own meaning. Red denotes the blood of martyred rebels. White represents the purity of freedom. Blue was once worn by Creon's people, and forbidden to all others -- so wearing it after his downfall became a badge of pride for those who'd helped do away with him. |
Unruly schoolchildren use the celebrations as an opportunity to play pranks on teachers whom they regard as tyrants. These usually take the form of amusing japes involving buckets of water poised over doors, or the burning of those educators (in effigy, if they're lucky...). |
Once Creon was dead, his orchards were pillaged, and the apples used to fill sugary pastries eaten in honor of the rebels. Bakers are keen to keep this tradition alive -- and make a small fortune each festival. |
In the name of freedom, children are allowed to neglect their chores when this annual festival comes around. They're also permitted to defy authority by insulting their parents or the local guardsmen. Though they tend to do so sparingly, to avoid any unpleasant beatings which might otherwise take place on the following day. |
During the assault on Creon's palace, rebels rode their horses through its halls and corridors. Modern revelers have been known to commemorate this by breaking into mayors' houses and spreading horse manure around the place. |
