Lore
The glow fades out of the gargoyle’s eyes, and the door swings open.

“That wasn’t so hard,” you say. “I heard most of those as a child.”

“That’s the problem with riddler gargoyles,” says Roland. “They were all made centuries ago, so they only know the classic riddles. ‘What walks on four legs in the morning…’ and so on.”

Beyond the exit is a short corridor, leading to another door. This one is unlocked, and opens to your touch, revealing a broad chamber with a high ceiling. At the far end is a staircase, which looks as if it leads up into the keep above. You’ve reached your goal. But your eyes are drawn to the strange contraption which dominates the middle of the room.

There’s a large metal table, with a bulky shape atop it covered by a large grey sheet. Bizarre devices which must be magical or alchemical in nature are arranged around the table. Lightning crackles in some of them, and you note that they’re connected to a metal rod which extends to the ceiling. Clear wires from the machines stretch under the sheet, into whatever lies upon that table.

“Oh…” says Cassandra, with dismay in her voice. “I wondered what happened to him.”

“Him?” you ask, already indicating for your companions to move into attack positions.

The lightning in the devices flashes, and darts along the wires like frantic snakes. The figure under the sheet convulses. Then it sits up, throwing the covering aside.

“Him,” says Cassandra.

"So, it's not enough that you raise zombies in this accursed place," you say, kicking the creature's now lifeless form, "but you actually stitch corpses together to create... whatever that monstrosity is?"

"We don't let things go to waste," Cassandra replies. "Why shouldn't the dead help the living?"

"Flesh golem, I suppose," muses Roland. "Never actually come across one before. Most golem makers prefer stone or metal. Lasts longer."

"My father had two of them built," says Cassandra, " to see if they made better soldiers than the zombies. One worked just fine. This one went a little...crazy...and we had to get rid of him. Father must have decided to put him in the dungeon."

"What are all these machines?" you ask.

"After a while they stop working, and you need lightning to get them moving again. With the other one, we just have a mage cast lightning bolt spells at him. These machines must have taken in lightning from the sky, and stored it till it was time for him to wake up."

"Remind me not to die in Vornstaag," you say, before heading towards the stairs.
