Lore
1. "Lizette, Alina, please allow me the honor of presenting you to Sulthus Quent." The man bowed, doffed his hat, and twirled the end of his waxed moustache in a single elegant movement. "As the leading advisor at King Jamus' court, this splendid fellow can no doubt help us in our efforts to drag the kingdom into the modern age."
His two female companions drifted into curtseys that were no less impressive than his debonair bow. Quent blinked and eyed their strange attire for some moments, whilst trying not to sigh. "Lord Bloodwyn. Ladies." The advisor gave a little nod to each of them in turn. "Your messenger said you had an urgent matter to discuss." "We most certainly do, Sulthus," Gerald Bloodwyn said. "One that shall liberate our fair land from the beastly dragons and usher us into a marvelous new era. Steam!" |
2. "Steam?" Sulthus Quent blinked.
"Steam!" Gerald confirmed. "Steam!" Alina and Lizette chorused. Their heads bobbed up and down. Quent sighed. Gerald's father was an important nobleman, so it behooved the advisor to meet with this eccentric offspring rather than having the palace guards toss him into the nearest privy. But he'd always found the man quite trying. "What's steam got to do with winning the war?" "Everything," he said. "Permit us to demonstrate, my good fellow." "Yes, do listen to Gerald," Alina said. "He's frightfully clever, you know." |
3. "The apparatuses!" Alina said. "Do bring them in!"
She clapped her hands. A number of servants scurried into the courtyard, dressed in the Bloodwyn family's livery. Some of them struggled beneath the weight of covered objects that bulged against concealing sheets in weird and wonderful ways. Two others bore an archery butt on their shoulders. They set this target up some distance away, then stood to attention on either side of it. "First," Gerald said, "allow me to revolutionize ranged warfare!" Lizette cuffed a servant who was too busy leering at Alina to heed his cue. He blushed, and whisked away the sheet covering his neighbor's burden -- revealing a strange mechanical contraption. Sulthus stared at it. |
4. "Is that a gnomish crossbow?" the advisor asked.
Gerald snorted. Alina gasped. Lizette frowned. "Gnomish?" Gerald said. "Pah! What is gnomish engineering but magic lurking behind a veneer of technology? The peasantry may be delighted when they watch those cogs and gears spin, but a true genius sees that they're no more the product of sophisticated thinking and ingenuity than a mage's fireball. This, my good sir, is a steam-powered crossbow. Behold the dawning of a new age!" Gerald hefted the weapon, aimed it at the far-off butt, and fired. A second later one of the servants screamed. The man hopped around and swore, while his companion tried to pull the bolt out of his leg. Alina's face went pale. Lizette took her arm to steady her. "Ahem... There's... There's an unseemly amount of wind today," Gerald said. "But nevertheless, my fine fellow, you see the magnificence of scientific endeavor! The range, the power..." |
5. Quent gestured at one of his guards. The man unslung his bow, put an arrow to the string, and fired at the butt. A second later his shaft quivered in the exact center of the target.
"A magic longbow can do just the same," the advisor said, "without all the fuss." "Magic?" Lizette said. "You besmirch the fine art of steam engineering, sir! Magic indeed! Magic has allowed our fine civilization to stagnate, to wither on the vine like unpicked fruit! Were it not for our reliance on sorcery, West Kruna could be at the heart of a vast steam-powered empire!" Alina nodded. Gerald tweaked his moustache. Quent frowned. "Magic protects our people against the dragons and their armies. Now if you'll excuse me, I have important matters to attend to. He nodded his head, turned around, and went back inside the palace. |
6. "Outrageous!" Gerald said. "He didn't even allow us to demonstrate our airship!"
"The man's a ghastly fool," Alina said. "An ignorant superstitious peasant," Lizette said. "Perhaps we should illustrate his folly with a display of steam power." "Yes!" Gerald said. "If we dispatched a dragon using our airship and our other implements of war, King Jamus would be forced to recognize the supremacy of steam!" "Genius, my dear!" Alina said. "Excellent!" Lizette said. "Tally ho!" The three of them strode from the courtyard, leaving one servant bleeding and the others scratching their heads over what they should do with the wealth of assorted mechanical paraphernalia. |
7. Solus was a patient drake. At least, he liked to consider himself so. However, there were certain things even he found vexing. Having three young children clambering all over him, for example. One of the little brats was tugging his wing. Another yanked on his tail. The third dangled from his neck whilst poking him in the eye. He was beginning to have some small inkling of why his malevolent parents had wanted to slaughter and subjugate West Kruna's humanoids.
"Children," he said, "please stop that." The girl laughed and poked his eye twice as hard. Solus grumbled. He padded across the grass in search of aid, and his orange eyes lit up when he caught sight of the frost mage. "Clara! Your offspring are proving... high-spirited. Please take charge of them!" |
8. Clara smiled.
"Sorry! I gotta go do stuff. Tink asked me if I wanted to go on a quest for an Orb of Nur. I was like, 'Duh! It magically changes the color of your hair!'" "But-" "I'll be back later. Just remember to feed them!" She began to walk away. The azure drake thought fast, his mind quickened by the abuse he was suffering from three pairs of tiny hands. "Wait! Have you ever ridden a dragon?" Clara whirled around. Her eyes gleamed. |
9. "Faster!" Clara said. "I wanna go faster!"
She dug her heels into Solus' scaly flanks, as though he were a belligerent horse. The dragon grimaced and swooped through the heavens. Providing aerial entertainment for the mage was somewhat demeaning, but it was better than dealing with her children -- whom she'd left in the care of a group of murderous felpuur assassins. Apparently they liked cats... "Hey, what's that?" Clara asked. She pointed at a curious, bulbous shape among the clouds. Solus flapped his wings and went in for a closer look. That was when the arrows started flying. |
