Lore

I. The history of the Shattered Moon clan has been passed down for generations. Deep in the recesses of their Moon Temples are scrolls preserved through magic and science so that the history of their people will never die.
II. Long ago their lands were ravaged by famine, war and despair. The gods seemed deaf to their prayers but upon the eve of what was likely to be the culmination of their demise a bright light came before a small group of travelers and spoke to them. It instructed them to retreat to the mountains for salvation waited within.
III. Perhaps it was fatigue or starvation but the town felt there was truly nothing left to lose and did as the spirit bade them. Many fell along the way until only a small handful of men and women stood at the entrance of a winding cave.
IV. The cave seemed to stretch on for miles until it finally started winding upwards, ever closer to the mountaintop. As the group climbed, their bodies weary and malnourished they felt a sense of purpose and renewed vigor as they approached the pinnacle.
V. Once there they could hear the chirping of crickets and the smell of clean air ahead. Their eyes took a moment to adjust as they came into the moonlit night. The moon was heavy in the sky, but it shone brightest upon a simple dais which sat within the center of the mountaintop.
VI. There before them was a blade, beautiful with the same bright glow as the moon itself. It shimmered between black and white and it seemed as if the moon itself was inviting the travelers to take the blade in their hands.
VII. As one brave soul approached she was startled as a deep, rumbling voice echoed throughout the mountains, and appeared in a bright light before her until finally it took the shape of a majestic dragon, "You have come far to seek this prize. You have proved your devotion, your honor and more. Take the Shattered Moon Blade in your hands and carry it forward. The salvation of your people is at hand."
VIII. She took the blade as she was instructed and felt powerful forces coalesce through it. Looking once again to the moon she could see cracks had formed and it waned in its strength, as if a portion of its own power had been imbued within the steel itself. She held it aloft and it emitted a blinding glow that seemed to wrap around her companions. One by one their woes, their ailments and their spirits lifted.
IX. They returned from the mountaintop and with the Shattered Moon Blade brought prosperity to their land once more. They took no titles and asked for nothing in return other than the privilege to serve their people. Warlords laid down blades slick with blood and devoted themselves to their clan, and thus it was that the Shattered Moon were born.
