The day was won, the demons bested. But Daena knew this was a temporary reprieve. They would return like they always did as the holy warriors returned to their respective corners of West Kruna. Daena knew the cycle must be broken.
Years as a soldier on the front lines had taught Daena much about swordplay, and her upbringing in a pious house devoted to Karuss had taught her much of holy texts and common rituals. She had the tools before her, she need only reach out and use them.
For five years she worked with the church and local militia building favor and experience alongside like-minded individuals. She knew it would all be for naught if she could not gain the support of the town.
So it was that she told herself the ends would justify the means and set in motion her plan. She traveled to neighboring cities disguised as a merchant and rallied a small group of eager cultists and brought them back to her hometown. They were easy to manipulate and followed her every command without hesitation.
The creature rose from their ritual, fire burning bright along its body, laughing with glee as it feasted upon the sacrifice which lay before it. Daena sprung the final portion of her plan as soldiers who had been tipped off to the cultist's plans arrived right on time, clerics in tow.
The work was bloody and by the time the ash had settled five guards and every cultist lay dead at their feet. As the demon lay writhing in pain upon the floor, Daena spoke the words of banishment and called forth divine energy to remove the beast from this world. Those who bore witness to her work commended Daena for her swift action and righteous heart.
Daena used this incident to incite the people to action, crying out that none would save the town but themselves. Demon worshippers lived among them and would never be cowed by the military might of distant cities; no, it must be their own.
It wasn’t long before the church conceded to her whims and the soldiers were quick to follow. Daena established a new branch of military might inspired by the Paladin order that had saved their town previously. The Order of Purification came to life, and Daena smiled to herself as she saw its banners erected at long last.
No power was too great, no sacrifice too dear for the Purification. And though many innocents would be caught up in their crusade, the Order justified its actions as keeping the peace on a larger scale. Daena sat down and surveyed a map West Kruna with markings of where her order had gained control.
She leaned back, closed her eyes and smiled. And as Daena smiled and sleep slowly took hold of her, she could feel her ever present passenger flash a toothy grin to match her own. Always present.
They were not content to simply banish demons within their community, but began to visit towns within close proximity of their own. The teaching of Purification spread and before long Daena had expanded her order and the people hailed her as a Goddess among them. Though she had never sought such blasphemous titles, she accepted their praise with a smile.
|"You are unsafe in your homes, along your streets or among friends. Dracoshire won't deliver us from these heretics, no, only we know what is at risk. Our lives, our souls - all can be forgiven in the light of the Heavens but we cannot expect others to fight our battles.
Bring forth your steel, bring forth your hymns, and let the Heavens give us the strength to fight back these oppressors and secure our home once and for all. Join the Order of Purification and leave the world a better place with your actions." --Grand Purifier Daena delivering a speech in the Grand Chapel of Karuss
|The soul wailed and twisted against its shackles, but when Daena entered the room it fell silent. Hollow eyes gazed at her, pain written within every portion of its face. Daena reached out and the soul seemed to relax and stare into the distance.
"This one is ready to take up arms again in the name of the Order. It will follow you now, commander." The commander bowed and led the spirit out, and Daena exhaled once he left the room. She felt renewed and the voice inside her head cackled once more.
|Reports say demonic influence is at an all time low, your Holiness. The people rejoice at the sound of our footsteps and our bishops predict that our services may no longer be necessary in but a few short years. Your crusade is winning, I am glad to report." The scribe had a broad smile on his face as he told Daena of this news.
"Truly we are blessed and my heart is gladdened to hear of this news. Thank you. You are dismissed." Daena let the smile fall from her lips once she was alone and contemplated her next move. She had underestimated the effectiveness of her soldiers and would need to ensure new cults sprung up. She would not let the people forget her anytime soon.
