Lore
1. The Oculus Occult was an organization of fanatics that followed an obtuse belief: the world was illusory, and the truth can only be seen by focusing one's vision of the world. They were notorious for kidnapping the farmhands and aristocrats of West Kruna and indoctrinating them into the order. The abducted victims that resisted the ways of the order were executed and disposed of. Those that yielded to the teachings were put through rigorous, painful transformations that hollowed out their egos from what was into what would be.
They called the leader of the Occult the Visionary. And there was a young woman in a village, named Chandra, whom the leader saw as having great potential for the order. "Take her," ordered the Visionary. "And burn her until she's purified." |
2. Chandra had a moist band wrapped over her eyes then was shoved into a coffin-sized oven where magical hellfire immolated her body, burning away all the memories of her previous life, and replacing with pain and darkness. She felt the hot flames licking at her flesh, boiling her blood and searing her bones until she screamed. But when she yelled, flames poured into her mouth and burned her from the inside.
When the purification process concluded, Chandra was pulled out of the oven quivering and squirming -- shriveled and charred like a burned worm. Then she was cocooned in lavender soaked bandages to stave off the aching burns that wracked her body. They cut her out of the wrappings several days later, and she emerged from the bindings with her flesh crackling, smoldering and pulsing like embers from a dying fire. "Come," called the Visionary, holding a hand out to Chandra. "See the truth in the darkness." |
3. The magical fire anesthetized Chandra's senses, but as a result her visual prowess became inhuman and extraordinary. She was able to see in complete darkness, as the world around her became a watercolor of vibrant scarlet. And by donning the mask of the Oculus Occult, the large marble over her eye honed her vision even further, allowing her to see the physical world omnidirectionally. But Chandra could see further than that; she could see through the lies of people, go past the walls of their minds and hearts, and see their personal truths naked and exposed.
That was when she saw another Oculus member named Theo, and saw how much he loved her. And for some reason she could not understand, Chandra loved him back. |
4. The Occult was a very monastic, sexless organization. The Visionary ordained that any form of physical contact, let alone showing a modicum of love, was punishable by death. Because according to the Oculus Occult, love in any form was an illusion, and only by overcoming love would one see the truth of the world.
And so Chandra and Theo never became intimate nor spoke a word to each other. Rather, a secret stare, or a simple glance, even seeing their presence in the dark, pulled them into a realm where they could see each other's hearts, feel them close, each beat and pulse, as they loved each other. They cast aside their attributes, and were only present to one another. And yet, there was still that enigma: why did they feel such intense passion for the other unexpectedly? Were they lovers before the order stole them away and burned away their memories? Or was it a deeper connection that even their omnidirectional eyes could not see? |
5. Chandra was trained in the assassination arts of the Oculus Occult. Her ability to see the world all around her gave her the mobility to avoid all attacks from every direction, even the ones that were aimed at the back of her head. The signature maneuver of the Oculus Occult always involved the evisceration of the victim's eyes, whether it was with the efficient gouger or the brutal impaler. Chandra rose through the ranks as the best assassin the order had ever seen, even rivaling the skills of the Visionary, with Theo coming in as second best.
One day Chandra and Theo met in secret by exchanging glances, like optical coitus without the physical intimacy. Suddenly a gang of Oculus cultists sprang out from the darkness and captured them both. The two were to face the Visionary and be punished for violating the ultimate taboo in the Occult -- the crime of loving each other. The two were careful not to give any indication of their affair, so how could anybody have known about it? |
6. Chandra and Theo were thrown into the Aperture, a place of judgment where the guilty stood at the center of a white ring wreathed in light while Oculus cultists observed around the perimeter in darkness. And in the middle of the congregation sat the Visionary on a throne of marble with a glass eye at the crown of the seat.
"I've known about your affair," explained the Visionary, "because I bewitched you two to fall in love the moment you laid eyes on one another." The modus operandi: it was all a test to further train the best Oculus assassins and promote them to the inner circle of the Visionary. Those entering this rank by overcoming love would be completely devoted to the tenants of the order, and serve the leader with unerring faith. "Now, show us how illusory love really is," ordered the Visionary while tossing a single gouger into the ring. |
7. The two hesitated at opposite ends of the Aperture. It wasn't confusion, nor conflict or uncertainty, but clarity that overwhelmed them. It was the ultimate truth they had to face at this very moment in the Aperture -- one must live, and one must die. Everyone watched with expectation.
They both rushed for the weapon, but Chandra was faster and snatched it away. However, Theo knew that while she was more agile, she was not as strong as he was. So he saw an opening in the instant she picked up the weapon and grappled her in a constricting vice. His hands were over hers, their fists shaking and struggling as they gripped the weapon. Chandra was locked in Theo's deadly embrace with her back pressed against him. At any moment, either of them could force the blade into the other's eyes. Then Theo professed, "I do this because I truly love you." It was the first and last time Chandra would hear him confess his declaration, because Theo jabbed the weapon deep into his eyes and killed himself. |
8. When Chandra looked at Theo's blood blossoming onto the floor, she saw a vision of what could have been: of her and Theo escaping the Occult together, far away where they could live in peace. They would have children, a boy and girl, they raise them, nurture them, become a family living in love, being in love, growing old as they flourished forever and ever.
But now that dream was gone, severed from the moment, and becoming the catalyst of her evolution. She now saw the nightmare, the twisted ugly truth of the world. Then she saw herself changing, becoming reality, becoming stronger, fueled by the rage burning in her heart, purifying her focus, seeing beyond the present and into the future. And before the Visionary could react, Chandra teleported in front of her with a thumb pressed onto her eye. "I see now that love isn't an illusion. I also see that your future," she assured, "is death." Chandra pressed her thumb down with fatal force. |
9. Chandra stood before the congregation of cultists, their eyes unblinking, witnessing the sight of the Visionary's corpse rolling onto the floor. And in one instant motion they all bowed down, chanting in an incomprehensible drone, worshipping and exalting Chandra as the new leader of the Oculus Occult.
With her powers of foresight, an ability that no other Oculus cultist ever had before, she could guide them all into a new era. And as Chandra sat on her throne of marble, her shimmering eye saw the future looked dark and promising. |
