Lore
I.
Anselm dropped to one knee as the last imp fell. He thrust his holy blade into the barren earth and clutched to it, lest he fall over. His eyes darted over the mass of demon spawn that lay slain before him, their unnatural ichor dripping from his steel. His gaze turned to the corpse beside him. His former squire, still gripping her shield and blade even in death. |
II.
She had served with him since the Dragon War had ended. Faithfully following him into his relentless conquest to secure safety for the world. His former life of depravity long forgotten as he had pushed and clawed to drive any demonic threat from Tor'gyyl. All of that was going to change now. One hand left the hilt of his blade to clutch at the blood dripping from his side. |
III.
Anselm was no stranger to change. Making hard decisions for the greater good had become second nature to him. Yet this task that lay before him was in its own class. The vampire woman's words rung in his ears. She was right, even though he did not want her to be. He could raise his blade against this demonic prince and finish him off, or... Anselm lifted his voice, forcing the words out. "I've come to make a deal." |
IV.
Lord Karzo let out a prolonged sigh as he watched the goings on below. His footmen were young and lazy. If they knew he was watching from the balcony of his citadel, disapproving, they did not care. Their drills were approached with reluctance and reprehension. Inconvenient chores. Long gone were the days when he and his comrades would leap into training as if it were their last battle. Many allies were saved by having that one additional maneuver mastered. Many more were not. Yet all of them took to the field with an intensity this generation would never know. |
V.
Karzo abandoned his post over the training yard and began to aimlessly wander the grand stone architecture that he now called home. His faithful service throughout the Dragon War and beyond was well rewarded. Once a knight, he now was a lord who had knighted many, and many more were in his service. A goblin noble in the court of West Kruna was all but unheard of. Yet here he was. However, he found it all lacking. |
VI.
Somehow he found himself looking over the art in his foyer, faceless warriors of a time long passed. His time would be up soon, and it would be up to these degenerates to defend the kingdom. The young fools who had forgotten the urgency and desperation that he knew so well. Karzo nearly growled as he looked over the statue that would far outlast him. "Something troubling you, Lord Karzo?" came a low feminine voice behind him. "I will be gone soon, and there will be no one here to remind these upstarts what's truly important," he spat out immediately, "No one to show them the importance of duty and loyalty." The cane at his side cracked against the ground in anger. "This blasted thing will have to watch all of their mistakes til their undoing." Lord Karzo paused, realizing he had no idea who he was speaking to. He began to turn. "Perhaps we can come to an arrangement..." |
VII.
Sundlac lay in the gargantuan bed, surrounded by many on all sides. Those that Sundlac had trained to be very good at chucking, those Sundlac had done chucking out for, and even some that Sundlac had chucked out a few times. Sundlac the Chucker had led a very impressive life, punctuated by how many people he had clobbered and chucked. Now it was time for him to finally rest, eternally. The owners of his previous establishment had been able to expand their business and grow rich thanks to Sundlac's efficient work. They had spared no expense for his final days. |
VIII.
Any town Sundlac rested in was considered safe, any battle he entered was instantly turned. Yet he never felt any inclination to leave his position at the Dancing Manticore. Sundlac's breathing began to slow as he closed his eyes. Darkness surrounded him, the voices around him were hard to hear. He tried to ask for another cup of ale before his final breath, but nothing happened. His eyes opened. He was surrounded by a piercing cone of light, around him were all the sad people who had come to mourn his death. Below him was his old and tired body, one giant arm hanging limp, the mug of ale just beyond its grasp. He lifted his gaze up to the light before him. "Sundlac. I am an angel of Mathala. My brothers and sisters are very impressed with what you have been able to do here." |
IX.
Sundlac shrugged, plenty of things to be impressed by. He looked back down at the mourners and his body and frowned. "The angels of Mathala have struck an arrangement with the vampiress Renelle. She seeks great warriors to join her order. We have come together to offer you to join us as an angel of Mathala, and remain here with Renelle--" "Sundlac gets to keep chucking?" The orc interrupted. The bright radiant being paused for a moment before answering. "Well, yes, if you'll allow, I will explain the full contract and agreement--" "Sundlac accepts these terms." A giant foot descended out of the void and onto the old body of Sundlac with radiant brilliance. Sundlac the angel stepped off his deathbed. Picking up the mug of ale, and his cudgel, he started to push through the group of staring mourners. "Pardon me." |
