Recolor of Traveler's Gambit Set
Gretcha wiped beads of sweat from her brow. The cavern felt like an oven but she knew the risks when she took the contract. Ever onward she traveled, her trusted crossbow at the ready as she held her lantern before her to light the way.
The earth rumbled and Gretcha nearly lost her footing. She had watched these tunnels for a month and had been biding her time until the creature would travel closer to the surface in search of an easy meal, something she hoped not to become.
The pay would be good, many people were eager to be rid of the beast that had plagued them for months and she had a buyer already lined up for the organs, she simply had to survive the hunt. She continued carefully down the tunnel until she came to a sprawling hallway with a massive stone in the center. She crept around the stone and held her lantern aloft, looking for the beast.
Out of the corner of her eye she saw movement and as she turned her head to look, a mighty eye stared back.
She hurriedly aimed and shot her crossbow wildly at the creature she mistook for a rock and the bolt harmlessly bounced off its scaley hide. The great worm lunged forward and snapped at her. She ducked and rolled on the ground, sending her lantern scattering across the cavern floor. Rising to her feet she pulled another bolt from her quiver and attempted to load it as the worm repositioned for another attack.
Gretcha took aim and loosed another bolt but the worm moved with greater haste than she had anticipated and dodged the bolt easily. It opened its mouth and before Gretcha could move its mighty maw engulfed her entirely.
The smell was a mixture of sulfur and bile and Gretcha had to fight to keep from vomiting. The beast tried to swallow her whole but she had lodged her crossbow in its throat and was holding fast in the creature's gullet. She tried to find a foothold and could see the faint glow of the monster's stomach acids farther down and panic took hold.
She held onto the crossbow with one hand and with her other pulled a dagger free, she could feel the soft flesh of the worm's throat working hard to force her deeper towards its digestive acids. In a panic she slashed wildly with her blade, carving chunks of flesh off the creature's throat, but the beast's fluids burned hot and heavy as they landed on her skin and she cried out in agony.
She continued to slash wildly but was doing more harm to herself than the creature and could feel herself rapidly losing her hold on the crossbow. Her hands were slick with slime and badly burnt and she lost her grip on the dagger. It went clattering down into the worm's stomach and she could hear the sizzling of its acids eating away the blade. Her options were quickly dwindling.
She reached into her satchel and pulled a small, round object she had purchased from a goblin. The instructions were vague at best but it was her last option. She braced her body against the beasts throat as best she could and grabbed the lighter from her pouch and as she began to slide downward she quickly lit the wick of the object. She threw it as hard as she could into the creature's stomach and tried to find a foothold.
As she slipped further down, she was deafened by an explosive sound and felt her body hurtling through the air until finally coming to rest against a cave wall. Still inside the creature's gullet she slowly stepped out to find pieces of the mighty worm plastered across the walls.
The organs would likely be in questionable condition, but she was mostly intact and had a giant worm corpse to carve up and sell. She breathed a sigh of relief, leaned up against a pillar to rest, only to rise again when another tremor rocked the cavern as a massive worm slipped up from underneath and greedily consumed the corpse of the worm she had slain.
Gretcha laid back and reconsidered her career as a monster hunter.
