I. "I've served under many commanders. Some were bold, others craven. Some cunning, others foolish. Heroes and villains. Avengers and upstarts. Nobles and demagogues. But there was never another like Dahrizon. Forgive me, [Player]... I know you've won many battles at the head of your forces, but even you can't comprehend what he was capable of. In the Year of the Ten Warlords, as soldiers bled and died for mastery of a disputed territory, Dahrizon carved his name on the face of West Kruna. He claimed the heads of three of the eponymous ten, and when only he and Vorlge remained we were certain that ultimate victory was within his grasp." -- Mascon
II. "Vorlge's forces were split in two. He'd ridden to the west at the head of one army and there vanquished Tamlar, another warlord vying for supremacy in that part of Rhynhart. In the east he'd left a second army under the command of his most trusted generals to deal with Aalcar, whom the bards remember as the most savage of the ten. Though in truth there was so much brutality in those months... Our own hands were bloody enough. Who can say which man might be deemed worse? But leave such matters to the priests and the philosophers... All that need concern us is that they slew Aalcar and scattered his forces. And they thus became our next foes." -- Mascon
III. "Dahrizon read the winds of war. That's how I always described it. He'd listen to all the reports, examine at the charts and maps he'd drawn up, then gaze out across the field like an augur watching for birds. When he was done he told us what would happen, how the battle would unfold -- and give us our orders accordingly. The men called it magic. But I'm not so certain. On occasion he would change his plans at the last moment, when our enemies arrived on the battlefield. He would see something in their formation or their poise which gave him pause and made him reconsider elements of our tactics. Thus I prefer to think of it not as magic but as genius. Though however his powers were derived, I did his bidding and led my units into position." -- Mascon
IV. "Their cavalry charged, rumbling and clattering with the cacophony of war. The riders' thick panoplies and the barding on their horses gleamed even in the overcast light of the grey heavens. Sorcery and strength together -- one of Vorlge's best tricks. In his armies the mages cast enchantments upon the heavy cavalry, enveloping them with magic to make their charges unstoppable. But Dahrizon had set in place measures of his own. When they drew within range we crouched, revealing the wizards who'd been hidden behind our armored forms. They cast their own magic, dispelling that which protected the cavalry, and we rose back up to meet their weakened, disrupted charge." -- Mascon
V. "Their infantry met us atop the butchered bodies of horses and cavalrymen, their battle line crashing against ours with the ferocity of desperate men. They had expected to see us devastated by the horsemen, but now they were forced to fight steady ranks of warriors -- firm and unbroken. At such times soldiers feel the shadow of doom falling upon them. Yet they fought well, and fought hard. Their blows rained down on our shields like a thunderstorm. The spears broke in our hands beneath the weight of war, and we continued the battle with sword and axe. My own blade cleaved more arms and necks than I could count, so many that I feared the mound of corpses would give my next foes the advantage of high ground. In the end we stood atop the dead as masters of the field." -- Mascon
VI. "On the night after the battle, the night before we were to face Vorlge himself, Dahrizon summoned us to his tent. The other generals and I gathered there, expecting to hear some new stratagem our warlord had devised. But the moment we saw him we knew something was awry. His features were pale, and decades seemed to have descended on him in mere hours -- turning him into a man twice his natural years. His eyes were melancholy, haunted, and swam with other emotions I couldn't fathom. When he spoke, with a strange, troubled tongue, he told us of the things he had seen. I understood little of what he said, but three of his words echoed in my mind: 'the dark horizon'. Then he told us that he had to depart." -- Mascon
VII. " Dahrizon rode off into the darkness, heading for his castle. The rest of us were left bewildered, unsure of what to do or even say. At last, when the shock of our circumstance faded, some decided that we should follow the warlord. His words had been enigmatic, but he seemed to believe he would face some danger at the end of his journey. So we pledged to aid him if we could. But others disagreed. They spat on the ground, cursed Dahrizon's name for abandoning us, and swore that they would lead the army to victory against Vorlge in his place. It was clear that neither side could sway the other. So we agreed to wake the other commanders and inform them of what had occurred." -- Mascon
VIII. "Dahrizon's castle gates were barred against us, its drawbridge raised. Beyond the walls we heard the clanking footsteps of the golems who served as the place's guardians, but of the warlord there was no sign. So we camped on the nearby moors and waited, hoping that he would come to us. It was there that messengers brought news of our brethren's defeat at Vorlge's hands, and we learned the survivors were marching to the castle. Our faces were grim, all our hearts heavy with the thought that we might soon have to do battle with men and women we had once fought alongside." -- Mascon
IX. "I parlayed with Tharn and the others. But they didn't heed. They yearned to spill Dahrizon's blood. So we fought, and many died. I was among them. It was only when I rose from the corpses, raised to undeath by some jest of the gods, that I knew we had won -- hollow victory though it was. Tharn and his people had departed. The field was ours. So I sighed with lungs that no longer needed to breathe, and helped the others bury the dead from both sides. It was an arduous task. We were still laying bodies in graves when we heard word of the massacre in Brierge. More savagery and death that history would mark against Dahrizon's name.... That mournful thought lingered in my mind after the work was done and we dispersed -- leaving the warlord's castle far behind." -- Mascon
