|I. "Who are those ruffians?" Count Kragmore asked. He stood at the window, gazing out across the sprawling reaches of his estate.
His butler leaned forward and squinted.
"I believe those are the Kings of Dawn, sir."
"What are they doing on my land?"
"They appear to be sauntering, sir."
|II. "This is outrageous!"
"Are the rights of private property to be set at naught simply because of a draconic invasion?"
"Apparently so, sir."
"I don't like it!"
|III. "Look at them," the count continued, "churning up the mud!"
"It did rain rather heavily last night, sir."
"Destroying my flowerbeds!"
"Those are weeds, sir. There haven't been any flowers since you had the gardener dismissed for walking on your grass."
"And what's that one doing with that sheep?"
"I... I couldn't possibly say, sir."
|IV. "Have those people killed!"
"Killed, sir?" The butler grimaced.
"Damn it! As a wealthy and powerful man, it's my gods-given right to have trespassers put to death! Go apprehend them at once!"
The butler blinked at him, gazed at the heavily armed miscreants, and blinked at him again. But Count Kragmore had never been one for subtle hints.
"Why are you still here? And why aren't those people dead yet?"
"Sir, these Kings of Dawn are-"
"Quite possibly, but-"
"Several of them are, by all accounts. But-"
"Anarchists! Upstart commoners claiming royal title!"
The butler sighed.
"Sir, they're heroes."
"Nonsense! Heroes? Do heroes traipse over a man's estates like common vagrants? What have these... these wretched curs done that's so heroic?"
|VII. "Do you recall Byron Siculus, sir?"
"The vampire? Didn't his men seize my cattle?"
"No, sir. They seized your maidservants. That's why the chambers are so dusty these days."
Count Kragmore waved his hand.
"Cattle... Maidservants... It amounts to much the same."
"Yes, sir. I recall you explaining that to their bereaved relatives."
|VIII. "What happened to that Siculus fellow anyway?"
"He was killed."
"Good! It's about time the militia did something right. What do I pay my taxes for?"
"It wasn't the militia who did it, sir. It was the Kings of Dawn."
"What? Those people out there? Those reprobates? Those vagrants? Those... Those..."
"Yes, sir. They attacked the vampires' castle, stormed its walls, and put all its foul denizens to the sword!"
|IX. "I see..."
The butler exhaled.
"In that case, sir, I'm sure you'll agree that a minor matter such as-"
"Have them killed anyway! Heroes should be setting an example, not tramping all over their betters' land!"
"As... As you wish, sir."
The butler bowed, left the chamber, and packed his belongings. He wondered if the Kings of Dawn needed a manservant.
