Lore
1. "Terracles! Terracles!"
The demi-god opened one eye and sighed. Sleep was rarer and more precious than any treasure these days. The moment he grasped it, someone or something always came to snatch it away. "Terracles!" He grunted, put on his loincloth, and strode towards the tent flap. He refrained from grabbing his club on the way, lest he be tempted to smash the skull of the fool who'd awakened him. |
2. "Terracles!"
"I heard you!" The hero frowned, but the look on the young man's face drained his anger away, along with the last lingering traces of sleep. "What's wrong?" "Invaders!" "The dragons? Aren't they sick of dying on our spears yet?" "No! A human fleet, attacking from the sea! Flying the flag of Melops!" "Melops burned more than a year ago, and its people died in its ruins. They have no fleets!" |
3. But the man had seen ships belonging to someone, even if he'd misread their flag, unless the gods had driven him mad. So Terracles gathered his finest warriors and set out for the coast.
"See, milord?" the messenger said, when they stood on a cliff overlooking the beach. He gasped, winded after trying to match the demi-god's stride, but his eyes gleamed as his finger pointed. And Terracles was forced to accept the truth of his words. For Melops' flag, one he'd thought long gone, fluttered from the ships' masts. And down below, along the shoreline, mustered men and women garbed in that fallen city's style. |
4. Terracles leapt from the cliffs, while his warriors scrambled down via safer paths. The earth trembled beneath his landing. A great explosion of sand flew in all directions. The people of Melops cried out, and hurried to form their battle lines. But the tall woman who stood at their forefront waved them back. She approached him alone, armor shining in the sunlight, great spear resting in her grasp.
The two heroes stared into one another's unflinching eyes. "Melops is dead," Terracles said. "Or did the underworld cough you back up?" "Our walls crumbled and our buildings burned," the woman said. "But while a single one of us draws breath, Melops still lives. My spear answers anyone who says otherwise." The woman tensed, and Terracles read the strength of the thews shifting beneath her armor. |
5. "Your city fell a year ago," he said.
"And for a year we've wandered, searching for a new home." "You'll find no sanctuary here. The dragons are waging war on this land, razing its settlements." "Then you need brave warriors. We've fought monsters on the seas and the islands. Wyrms don't frighten us." She struck the ground with the butt of her spear. "My name is Callissa. Promise my people land to call our own, and I'll grind your dragons' carcasses into the dust." Terracles grinned. He'd enjoy seeing this one in battle. |
