Lore[]

Enter Battle[]

Lore
"What would you have me do, sire? Should we continue..."

"With the masquerade? Perhaps-"

A long, loud creak turned both their heads towards an iron-ribbed door.

"Did Quent station men in the cellar?" Marcus asked.

"No... We're supposed to be alone."

"Then-"

The door burst open, and blackness poured from its maw. An ebon tide flooded into the room -- a mass of slimy dark flesh, wide batrachian faces with cold gleaming eyes, and blades that sang murder as the firelight danced across them.

Marcus' sword flew from its sheath.

Victory[]

Lore
The frog-man blinked. Translucent nictitating membranes clouded and unclouded his shining eyes. Then Marcus' longsword slipped from his chest. Green blood erupted from the gaping wound and splashed over the warrior. His blade and panoply were already soiled beyond all recognition, smeared with sickly greenness, slathered with chunks of sleek flesh.

A half-crushed eyeball slid down his breastplate, leaving a viscous trail in its wake.

Another black frog-man lunged in the periphery of his vision. But not for Marcus. He was going for Jamus...

The former guard-captain of Fallows whirled round. His sword rose and chopped in one hard, heavy, unforgiving blow. Brains splattered over the king's tunic. Then Marcus spun again, and this time his longsword hewed its way through a frog-man's gaping maw -- widening it until it stretched across the creature's entire head.

Black batrachian bodies littered the floor of the inn. It had been the work of moments, but the gore was enough to paint the stanzas of the bloodiest bardic song.

There was an instant's silence, while the warrior's gaze met the king's. Then the entrance crashed open, and armored figures surged into the room. Commander Nathanial and Sulthus Quent were in their midst.

The soldier's froze. They gawped at the heaps of slaughtered foes. Then at the horrific, gore-covered warrior. And finally at their king.

"The well in the cellar," Jamus mused. "We should have been more cautious."

The king moved his hand towards Marcus' shoulder. It hovered for a moment, before falling back at his side. Marcus glanced at his pauldron. Half a frog-man's brains decorated it.

"Commander Nathanial..."

"Sire?"

"Your sword please."

"The soldier hurried over, bowed, and presented it to him. Jamus took it from his hands. Then he looked to Marcus.

"Kneel."

Marcus' eyes widened.

The hero had vanished, perhaps gone to his/her grave,

And it fell to the bronze man the kingdom to save.

He gazed up to the heavens, the black nighttime sky,

To the distant horizon where many would die.

Distant Dracoshire where many would die...

Flee/Defeat[]

Lore
The odds seemed to have his death written upon them. But Marcus couldn't flee. Not while his sovereign was in peril.
