Lore
I. The sands danced in tandem with the wind as mighty gusts blew across the sand encrusted dunes. A gnarled and cracked hand rose slowly, followed by an arm, a shoulder and finally an entire creature. A skeleton, risen from the grave of some ancient battle surveyed its surroundings as sand poured from its various surfaces. All around it other creatures of battles long forgotten rose again and lumbered forward. |
II. At first their numbers were few and their movements slow and cumbersome. One heavy foot placed in front of the next, but as they drew closer to their ultimate destination their power grew and their movements quickened. A jeweled city lay on the horizon and as the sun began to set the hills were dotted with the unliving as a cowled figure leaned against his staff. |
III. Now was the time for his vengeance. He would take the city with his new undead host and the gem he sought would be his. He could command a legion powerful enough to sweep the entirety of the world with the gem's power, he need only overcome the city's guardians. A trifling task for his new army. With one fall of his arm he commanded the legion to press onward and thus the hills were filled with the cacophony of bone upon metal as the undead minions advanced. |
IV. The defenders were not prepared for such an overwhelming force and quickly fell before the undead host. Mighty warriors stood their ground as best they could but as each defender's final breath escaped their lips they knew they were simply bolstering their enemy's legion. Victory was close at hand for the necromancer, he could taste the gem now as he moved through the streets. The power was close now. |
V. The common folk prayed and the clerics asked for the god's forgiveness if not their mercy. A small child clutched a primitive figurine carved from some ancient piece of drift wood. Tears ran like rivers down her small face as she softly prayed to the gods above for deliverance. She clutched the figurine until her knuckles were white and her eyes opened wide as a skeletal figure approached her with an arm raised high, sword in hand. |
VI. As the skeletal minion was about to bring its blade down upon the child, a burst of energy radiated from the figurine she had clutched to her chest. Blue light flowed from it and smashed the skeleton to dust and the light continued to traverse the city before ultimately making its way down to the gem the necromancer sought deep within the heart of the city. |
VII. The light from the figurine mixed with the gem and an eruption of sound resonated throughout the city. The undead host halted a moment as the necromancer briefly faltered. He cleared his eyes and saw an armored figure before him. The armor was old and scarred but two bright blue orbs burned brightly from beneath its helm. A mummified warrior of ages past, nothing his minions couldn't handle. |
VIII. First he sent them one by one at the figure before him, but the warrior's movements were quick and decisive. Every cut of his blades seemed to sever the magics that connected the necromancer to his mighty army and they fell as easily as a leaf before the wind. The armor clad figure stared at the necromancer and he could hear an icy voice within his mind. "Trespasser." It was slow at first, but the figure moved forward and his voice grew harsher, louder, colder. "TRESPASSER." It spoke to him with a timeless fury. A mighty sandstorm had formed and the necromancer could feel his skin being slowly stripped from his body as the sand bit deep. |
IX. The figure gripped the necromancer by the throat and the wailing of countless souls filled his mind. He tried to scream but his windpipe was close to breaking under the assaulter's grasp. "YOU DO NOT BELONG. YOU ARE A MISTAKE. A BLOT UPON THE NATURAL ORDER OF THINGS." The warrior spoke again and the necromancer’s body grew cold. "YOU. WILL. BE. PURGED." And with a final flex of his mighty hand the necromancer's life was ripped from his body. It attempted to float away but the gaze of the warrior fell upon it, and a deep, rumbling word emanated from his visor. "YOU. WILL. SUFFER." And with that command the necromancer's soul was sent screaming into the warrior's outstretched arm and a faint glow flashed upon his blade. |
