Lore[]

Enter Battle[]

Lore
You kill and curse in the same instant, swearing as your blade splits a beastman's skull -- making the profanity into an absurd war cry.

Ahead of you, beyond the enemies scrambling to bar your path with their hirsute bodies and vicious weapons, some of the creatures are entering the tomb -- slipping through the shadowy, crooked oblong entrance and vanishing within.

Your sword strikes with redoubled urgency as you press forward. Marcus, Medea, and some of the others come to your side, lending their weight, weapons, and song to the final push. Beaneath fast, exhilerating harp music and elven verses, bloody and fur fly.

Amidst the crimson carnage, the screeches, howls, and endless sounds of steel clanging against steel or else the softer, meatier thuds of it sinking into flesh, a gap appears in the battle line -- carved by your weapon and inviting your boots. In that space you see a muscular creature with purple-blue fur and skin, roaring unintelligible things from a warthog-like snout whilst making unmistakable gestures of command with his empty left hand and the axe in his right. If you can get past him, perhaps you can catch up with the ones who entered...

You dash through the space, leaving your companions to finish off the others.

The purple-blue beastman grunts as you approach. He reaches to the primitive belt that girds his loins, and snatches a bottle from its crude pouch. You grin. A healing potion won't save him when you hack his head off.

But when he gulps the bright cyan liquid, and his thews begin to bulge like wineskins being filled, it occurs to you that it might not have been a healing potion after all.

Victory[]

Lore
The hulking purple-blue monstrosity bellows. An avalanche of muscles flex and shudder across his massive bloated torso and tree-like arms. A fist that seems as big as your chest swings at you in a downwards, clubbing blow -- threatening to crack your skull beneath its weight.

You slash at the outside of his forearm as you sidestep. It's like cutting into a castle wall made of tough, sinewy meat. He grunts, and swats you aside with a sweeping backhand that buffets your body before you can dodge, smashing the wind from your lungs and lifting you clean off your feet. A breathless, almost smothered groan escapes your mouth as you sprawl on the ground. It feels as if you've been hit by a battering ram...

The beastman looms above you, a purple-blue mountain of flesh, and raises his fist to pound you into the dirt.

Then he squeals.

He looks down. You look down.

"What?" Rissa asks from between his legs. "Seemed like a sodding obvious idea to me."

She makes another quick upward thrust with her dagger for good measure, then skips away as the beastman falls onto his knees. You push yourself up, your bruised ribs and battered lungs moaning with each movement, and stare into his glazed eyes. A second squeal, this one fainter, escapes his maw.

You stick your sword in the middle of his throat, between the thick tendons, to put him out of his considerable misery.

"Some of them went inside," you say, as the others gather round.

"We have to pursue them," Dao says.

"If we hold the entrance," Marcus says, "we could just ambush them when they come back out."

"No... There are other paths in there. Other exits. And if they did emerge from this one, we don't know what power they'll be wielding."

There's a crash of harp music.

"That isn't our only problem," Medea says.

She points down the valley with one hand, and brings an ominous refrain from her instrument with the other.

"The rest of their army," a woman says. "Before you came, we didn't think we'd live long enough to see them."

The speaker is a tall, slim woman in a mail shirt that's now more red than silver in hue. Her hair's disheveled, and it too is streaked with crimson. But in spite of her gristly, unkempt condition, her martial bearing and firm posture carry a distinct air of command.

"Kaitlin?" you ask.

She nods.

"<playername>," Dao says. There's a faint growl in the felpuur's voice. "We must go into the crypt!"

"He's right," Kaitlin says. "It's our duty to stop them looting it. But I can't ask you and yours to head inside that godsforsaken place, dragon-rider... I'll go."

"Been in many dungeons?" Roland asks. "The kind with traps and monsters?"

"No."

"Then leave this one to us. You belong here, with your troops."

You look to Marcus.

"Go," the guardsman says. "Take some of the others. The rest of us will break their army."

"You're sure?"

A faint smile crosses his dark lips.

"They don't even have a dragon," he says.

You gaze at the approaching horde. A large force... It will be a tough battle. The kind you should face alongside your comrades. But there isn't time for indecision. You trust Marcus, and the courage of your army. So a moment later you pass through the stone archway, beneath the grinning skull, into the Crypt of Caracalla.

Flee/Defeat[]

Lore
Okay, this is just insane. You'll come back when you've found a bottle of that magic potion he glugged.

After you heal your wounds, you may try again. Perhaps purchasing a few more pouch items would aid your chances of survival?
