Lore
I. Avinashi frowned even before she opened her eyes. No scent of herbs and spices inveigled her waking nostrils, or teased her from bed with the promise of zesty warmth. She sat up and glared. Her morning cup of chai wasn't on the table. Nor were the little plates of manticore keema, chimera pilau, and crushed acid beetle chapattis which would have followed that invigorating beverage and completed her breakfast.

Her stomach bubbled, not in hunger but from sheer vexation.

"Stupid boy..." she murmured.

II. Her first thought was to go to the temple's main room, drag him off his sleeping mat, and box his ears until he begged her forgiveness. But the view from her window stopped her in mid-stride. Dawn painted the eastern sky with splashes of crimson, like the blood spraying from the neck of a sacrificial goat. Her mother had always said this was a good omen for a priestess. A sign that the gods were ready to accept the day's offerings.

Avinashi bowed towards the rising sun, knelt, and began to utter her prayers. The boy's beating could wait.

III. "...and may Ukshmi smile upon my friends while stomping on my enemies."

Her morning entreaties thus concluded, Avinashi pressed her palms together, bowed her head, and smiled. Calling on the goddess had mollified her somewhat. She would only hit the boy once, and order him to shovel the sacred elephants' dung for five hours. Then to demonstrate forgiveness she would have him paint her toenails. Or maybe braid each sextet of her hairs in preparation for the coming festival. The priestess sighed at the thought of such clemency. Her goddess would be proud!

IV. She left her bedchamber and made her way to the shrine. As always, the sight of Ukshmi's statue pleased her. Its gold limbs shimmered in the gathering morning light. The goddess' graven lips seemed to smile, welcoming Avinashi to a brand new day in her divine service. But a flicker of movement by the idol's feet caught the priestess' eyes, and the joy died on her face.

First her jaw dropped open, then her fists clenched. After that came the screech -- one so violent and wrathful that the elephants shuddered outside the temple's walls.

V. Rats! There were rats in the shrine, scurrying around the goddess' statue and nibbling on the previous night's offerings! Avinashi roared. She seized a sacred halberd and charged into battle -- chopping and slashing. Little cups and dishes flew in all directions and shattered on the stone floor. Splashes of milk and pieces of half-eaten sweetmeats arced through the air, scattering crumbs like dust from a fairy's pouch. A rat squealed before falling into two bloody halves. But the rest of the rodents dashed for freedom and evaded the priestess' murderous swipes.

VI. "Zaboo!" she cried. "Wretched boy!"

She stormed across the chamber, to the saffron screen that hid one of its corners. It was his duty to clean the offerings away each night -- lest rats and insects gather for an impious feast. He had failed! Was this gratitude, after she'd given him a life of purposeful indentured servitude and a roof over his head? After she'd granted him the honor of plucking her nostrils and scratching her back during their sacred baths?

The sacred halberd was still in the priestess' hands when she kicked the screen aside. She raised it above her head, and in that moment even she didn't know whether she would batter him with the flat of the blade or split him in half with its deadly edge. But the choice was taken from her. The rough sleeping mat was empty, save for a piece of parchment.

VII. Priestess,

Ukshmi isn't the right goddess for me. All those arms are creepy. Apostasy'd! I'm leaving the temple. The adventurers said I could go with them. And I think the red-haired one likes me! Enchant'd!
