|1. There are a number of realms that the mortals of Tor'gyyl know of, such as the hells and the ones inhabited by the gods, but few understand the realm of dreams. Only those who have been granted the ability to dreamwalk are able to traverse and interact with the lucid reality, such as Gyzix and his band of Twilight orocs.|
|2. A condition began afflicting the Twilight orocs. When they slumbered and entered the dreamwalk state, few returned to the waking world. The others were suspended in a state of eternal sleep, neither conventional nor magical could awaken them. Eventually, the ones who never awoke crumbled to dust. Gyzix was concerned with the fate of his Twilight kin, so he enlisted the aid of Cazak the Sightless to discern the nature of the disorder by reading their crystals.|
|3. "Is this eternal sleep a byproduct of our ukrak biology?" asked Gyzix with a furrowed brow, as he watched Cazak wave his hands in concentric circles over a body of a slumbering Twilight oroc.
Cazak shook his head and replied, "No, my friend. The crystals on your brothers and sisters tell me that their affliction comes from a nightmare shadow called the Dream Eater, which binds them to the dream realm. This entity then consumes your kin to obtain the essence of your ukrak powers so that it can manifest itself in our waking reality."
"What must we do?" implored Gyzix his as he clenched his fists.
The blind oroc answered, "My sightless healers and I will do what we can to keep your brethren from turning into dust. Meanwhile, you must enter the dreamwalk state and stop the nightmare shadow from killing any more of our Twilight people."
|4. When Gyzix dreamwalked, he normally entered the realm within his own hardened crystalline body. However, the presence of the nightmare shadow had loosened his degree of control in the lucid reality. So it came as a surprise when he appeared in the dream realm as a mortal man wielding dual blades in a thicket of forest and mist.
Being in a body of flesh and blood that lacked any sort of tactile resistance and tenacity was an awkward sensation to Gyzix, one of vulnerability and weakness. Still, when he held onto his weapons, he felt confident and experienced, like this body had been in many battles, and that these blades were simply an extension of his will.
|5. "That body you inhabit comes from a man named Roland. Or rather, a simulacrum of him," quipped a voice from behind Gyzix.
His movements were more instinctual, his body acting before it had even started to think. Gyzix spun in place and immediately took a cautionary battle stance with his weapons drawn.
"Who speaks to me? Show yourself!" he barked, his voice echoing into the forest's mist.
A woman dressed in exotic cloth and sashes stepped out of the shadows, carrying curved blades that gave her an alluring but dangerous countenance. Unlike Gyzix, she did not engage the conversation with weapons prepared to strike, and approached the situation in a diplomatic way.
|6. "My name's Astria," she replied. "And like you, I'm a dreamwalker."
Gyzix narrowed his eyes, wary of her true intentions, so he replied, "You seem to have knowledge of me, but I know nothing of you. Are you friend or foe?"
Astria gave an amicable smile and answered, "I'm a guide to help those lost in the sea of dreams, to aid the ones that drift too far from the waking world."
"That still does not answer my question," he replied, still incredulous. "Are you friend or foe?"
She responded with a smirk, "I am who I'm supposed to be at a given moment. I can be the one whom you've always wanted, your greatest hopes or secret desires. Or I can be your punisher, the one who absolves you of your sins, the one who kills you."
|7. "But our goals our aligned. I too seek the Dream Eater that plagues this realm. You and I are on the same side, and I am here to help," continued Astria.
Before Gyzix could respond, the shadows in the forests began to click and clatter, taking on humanoid forms. They looked like clenched fists that writhed and squirmed, their bodies covered in all manner of eyes, and their necks bulged with mouths that had crooked teeth. The creatures surrounded the two in a pincer attack formation.
"Nightmare fiends, the minions of the Dream Eater!" cried Astria, as she drew her weapons and spun around to cover Gyzix's back.
He also turned in place with weapons ready to strike, defending Astria's back, and replied, "I suppose I do not have much of an option in this matter. We are allies then, if we are to survive the nightmare of this realm."
|8. Their weapons whistled through the air, creating a harmony of blades that slashed and eviscerated the dream beasts. Gyzix's human body continued to surprise him, exemplifying a finesse and speed that his earthen form would have never accomplished with his crystalline drill and blade. And Astria held her ground too, just as maneuverable and lethal as he was in battle. It wasn't long before all the enemies were dispatched as they dissolved into ethereal smoke.|
|9. When the battle was over, Astria let out a shrill whistle. Two birds of vibrant colored feathers were summoned into the dream plane as they let out several caws and ruffled their chests. They fanned out their tails to reveal a shimmering, emerald plumage that made these avian creatures more like living gems than any sort of animal Gyzix had seen.
Astria mounted one of the birds and ordered, "Come. If the Dream Eater called its minions to stop us, it must be growing desperate, and close to manifesting into the waking realm."
