Lore
I. Sala walked the line of prisoners as she did every day. Her soldiers took turns questioning the captives each day to uncover more about the surfaces of Tor'gyyl and find weaknesses to exploit. Today, despite her rank, it was her turn to speak with a prisoner, a task she did not revel in but would carry it out all the same. Most of these meetings followed the same script; the prisoner would beg and plead and let slip simple and useless facts to try and buy their freedom or the shadow elves' mercy. She selected a quiet man wearing tattered red and black robes. She led the prisoner to a room and attached his shackles to the iron bar on the table and sat down across from him. |
II. She looked the man over; human, late forties she suspected, greying hair and a weathered look in his eyes, "Alright then. I can't imagine you don't know how this goes, you've likely spoken with other prisoners we've exchanged words with at this point. So just cooperate and this will go quick and smooth. Do you understand?" The man stared off into the distance, as if Sala didn't exist, which irked her. She stood up and delivered a hefty punch across the man's jaw, "Hey! I asked you a question." The man spit blood from his mouth and shook his head before looking at Sala as if he were seeing her for the first time, "Y-yes, I do. My apologies I... Was elsewhere." He said. Sala nodded and sat back down and called for water to be brought for the man. |
III. She had let her temper get the better of her. It wasn't the first time but she hated that she wasn't in control of her emotions at all times. Clearing her throat she began, "So, now that I have your attention. What do you know about the area? Any relics or items of note? Any supplies we should be aware of?" The man cocked his head and looked off into the distance briefly as if hearing something for his ears only. Shaking his head he drank deep of the water that was provided. Wiping his mouth with the back of his hand as best he could while shackled he leaned back and thought for a moment before giving his reply. "Aye, there are... Things in these parts. Things most of the others don't know about." Sala was skeptical but kept quiet on the off chance the old man gave her something actionable. She allowed him to continue, "You see, I joined the forces to aid in the fight against your people because I'm part of a very small, but very special order or pyromancers. Deep within the heart of our temple a great magma beast is chained and bestows upon us its gift. The gift of flame." And with those words a spark lit up from his hands and his shackles turned red hot. |
IV. Sala was on her feet, blade in hand. The man's face split into a grin as the shackles melted from his wrists somehow leaving his flesh untouched by the heat. He spread his hands wide in an unimposing manner and Sala pressed her blade to his throat hard enough to draw a small droplet of blood, "Why would you tell me about this order? And why wouldn't you break your shackles earlier if you could do it anytime you wanted?" She pressed her blade a little harder. The man swallowed hard, "Well, I didn't break my bonds because while my powers are sizeable, I'm no hero of myth; I couldn't defeat an entire army by myself. As for why I tell you this now, well... Because you're greedy; you lust for power and I know the power I tell you of will kill you." The mirth had left his face. |
V. "Where is your temple? Tell me exactly." She pulled her blade back and produced a parchment and quill for the man to write and draw upon. Once he was finished with his task he knelt before Sala and exposed his throat, she looked at him questioningly, "What are you doing?" A joyless laugh left his throat, "I understand full well the cost of war. With my instructions in hand you have no need of me. A flame can only burn so hot for so long, I am ready for mine to be extinguished." Sala brought the pommel of her blade hard across the man's temple sending him sprawling across the floor unconscious. She called out and guards came rushing in, "Keep this one isolated from the rest and bind him in suppression shackles. He's a sorcerer." Sala then reviewed the notes he had left her. |
VI. A day or so passed until Sala could put together a small group to join her in infiltrating the temple. She hand picked her ten best soldiers and two trackers to make their way to the temple as unhindered by enemy forces as possible. To her surprise the instructions were incredibly precise and her group arrived without an issue. The temple's doors were massive things made of a dark, black stone and to her surprise the temple wasn't locked nor guarded. As the doors groaned open she could feel an intense heat upon her face and began to sweat profusely. Blades and magic at the ready, she and her soldiers proceeded cautiously. |
VII. The path wound downward lined by braziers. There were no signs of guards or priests and the only sound in their ears was a very slight, gentle hum in the air. They continued for what felt like hours before coming to a wide cavern. Surrounded by pools of fiery hot magma which lept up to lick the walls. A long and wide walkway was infront of them with a lone, cowled figure standing at the edge of a great cliff. The shadow elves' group approached slowly and quietly with Sala at the lead. When she was close enough to the figure she pressed her blade's edge into the figure's back and spoke, "Turn around slowly! And if you try to yell for help I'll kill you before the words escape your pathetic lips." The figure raised their gnarled hands high and did as they were told. The cowl fell back and Sala's brow furrowed in frustration as the same man she had locked up but a day or two prior stood before her. |
VIII. "Impossible!" Sala exclaimed, "I had you locked up. You couldn't have escaped and gotten here before us." The man chuckled before giving his reply, "Much and more is possible at the flame's behest, m'lady. I knew you couldn't resist coming here after our... Discussion. The flames have whispered your name and prepared for your coming. Now behold! Arra'nox the Incinerator and cower before his power." At those words, from behind the man the magma surged into a massive, winged beast. Sala's eyes went wide as she beheld the creature; a magma dragon. |
X. Sala reached deep within and the shadowy magic on her arms danced with great intensity as she let loose a torrent of dark magic to eat away at the magma. A terrible, hissing sound filled the cavern as the magma was beaten away from Sala's magical onslaught. She raised her chin defiantly at the beast. Shock was plain upon the man's face as he bore witness to Sala's deeds. "She... She is much more powerful than I had anticipated. We must destroy her! She will destroy everything; she is undisciplined, untamed, a raging fire in her own right!" The dragon laughed once again, "SHE IS... A RAGING INFERNO. A FIERY... UNTAMEABLE CREATURE... FILLED WITH ANGER. SHE IS... WORTHY." The man's looked on in horror as the dragon battered him aside into the magma with a mighty claw before turning its attention to Sala. |
IX. "Fall back!" Sala yelled, but it was too late. The dragon opened its mighty maw and a torrent of lava spewed forth, engulfing her troops. Sala raised a protective spell and could feel the heat beating down against her, battering at the back of her mind as an intense heat which started at the small of her back rose to the back of her skull, threatening to disrupt the incantation. "I will not yield, beast! I have come for your power and I shall have it or I shall die in the attempt!" The great dragon let out a deep, rumbling laugh and replied in a slow, methodical tone. "THEN. DIE." |
XI. "YOU... ARE... WORTHY OF MY... GIFT. HENCEFORTH YOU... WILL BE SALA BLAZEWIND... FORGE YOUR... OWN FUTURE. INCINERATE THE... SHACKLES OF YOUR... SOCIETY!" And with those words, Sala was engulfed in a blaze of fire. She screamed out in pain, but the pain was a fleeting sensation and once it passed it was replaced with a strange sense of serenity. She felt no pain, and her anger was no longer in control of her, but she of it. She looked down at her arms. Her shadowy magic had been replaced with flame and she could feel the great beast's gift running through her body. She reached out with her senses and could feel the souls of her troops escaping the room. She focused on those spirits and screamed out, "NO! I did not give you my leave! Return to me!" |
XII. With a wail, the spirits shot back into the incinerated bodies of her soldiers. They rose from their fiery grave a shell of their former selves. The parts Sala did not like she burnt from them and replaced with obedience. The world would know her power, and no cost was too great to pay for what she had received. Or so she thought. And that's precisely what Arra'nox was counting on. |
