| I. Derek the Daring fought in Arcadius Selutha's ranks when that nobleman defended Ralmarthan and slew the gold dragon which beset it. Despite whispers that Derek had shied away from much of the fighting, and only wounded the dragon by chance whilst swinging his sword in a blind panic, he was fond of bragging about the victory -- calling himself a dragon-slayer. He would stride into taverns and be plied with tankards of ale in exchange for the telling of his exploits, enjoying the boasting as much as the drunkenness, if not more so. He reveled in the gasps of awestruck maidens, the looks of respect from men who aspired to one day be his equal. | |
