Lore
A group of adventurers grabbed their enchanted weapons, set out on a grand quest, and, after an appropriately grueling battle, slew a demon. The band returned to the local tavern, elated with their victory. They ordered a round of drinks for the whole establishment -- which was costly, especially since the demon hadn't possessed any loot beyond a dubious loincloth and a nose ring, and funds were already running low. But generosity seemed like a heroic trait. Thus they grinned and bore the financial loss, whilst regaling their fellow patrons with their exploits.
At that point a dark pankratiast walked into the pub and tossed a heart onto the bar. It transpired that this had belonged to a similar fiend, whom she'd beaten senseless prior to tearing the organ from his chest. The drinkers pushed tankard after tankard into the pankratiast's hands, and clamored for a blow-by-blow account. Meanwhile the adventurers sat in the corner -- weeping over their bill. |
Most martial artists find standard pankration matches to be suitable test of their fighting prowess. However, something drives a few to seek greater challenges. Their pursuit has been dubbed the "dark pankration" -- since they usually battle their adversaries during the nocturnal hours. |
Dark pankratiasts cut and tattoo their flesh with powerful symbols, either in honor of their gods or adherence to occult rituals. These imbue their bodies with the same enchantments borne by magic weapons. The application can be excruciating, and the eldritch energy flowing through muscle, blood, and bone is a slow poison which ensures no pankratiast will ever live to see old age. |
If they have the right symbols on their limbs and torsos, dark pankratiasts can destroy elementals with a suplex or chokehold. |
Did a dark pankratiast really kick a vampire so hard in the groin that he crumbled to ash? It's difficult to separate truth from myth, since nosferatu aren't willing to help prove whether or not that's actually possible. |
Boxers and wrestlers once argued over whose art was a superior means of combat. The pankration was supposedly invented to settle the matter, by allowing athletes to both punch and grapple. Over the years its range of techniques broadened. Elves are credited with adding kicks to the sport, for example. They practiced a form of kick-based martial art designed to ensure that they wouldn't have to sully their hands when destroying an enemy in unarmed combat. Stonebound dwarves and Titaran humans both claim to have introduced headbutts -- and their arguments on this subject tend to be settled with the crashing of skull against skull, until one party falls down. |
The ancient tradition of tying a vanquished adversary to one's horse and dragging them through the streets or across the countryside is frowned upon at athletic contests. But when dark pankratiasts pummel demons unconscious, there are no judges around to issue said frowns. |
