Lore
I. "You're the dragon-rider, aren't you?" the old orc says.
"That's me. %name% Kasan. Pleased to meet you." He slowly shifts his staff to his other hand, leaning his weight on its stout wood, and shakes your hand with his right. His grip's strong and firm, despite his ancient face and frame. "Yarbek," he says. His accent's cultured. The voice of an educated man. |
II. "What brings the great hero to our little part of the world?"
"Well... The king wants me to look at places where they could... build my family castle." You hope the awkwardness you feel isn't reflected on your face. This whole 'Kasan' thing is taking some getting used to. It's a little difficult to look peasants in the eye, people who're struggling to get by and rebuild their lives after the war, and talk about your impending luxury. |
III. "To the victor go the spoils, eh?" he says. The orc grins. "Good fortune."
"Uh, yeah. I..." "I meant good fortune for me." "If you're about to rob me and steal my castle, you should know it hasn't been built yet. You might want to come back in a few months or so." Yarbek laughs. |
IV. "I live nearby, %milord%," he says. "I'd like to brew you some tea, if you can spare the time."
"Call me %name%. %Milord% doesn't fit well on someone who used to dig up turnips for a living. But I'm in no rush. Tea would be nice, thank you." You walk down the country lane with the amiable orc, chatting about the war and the weather, and other things that drift on the warm breeze. Soon you reach a picturesque cottage nestled behind a garden of bright flowerbeds. "It's no castle," the orc says, "but at least no one ever tries to storm the battlements." |
V. Yarbek directs you to a comfortable chair by the window, which looks out across the garden's red, white, and purple richness. Then he goes over to the fireplace and sets to work brewing the tea.
"Did you ever meet an orc called Gurdek?" he says. "He fought at the Battle of Dracoshire." "If I did, I don't think I heard his name. Hundreds of soldiers shook my hand the night before the battle, from all races. He may've been one of them." Yarbek nods. |
VI. "He was my son. A big, strong lad. Stronger than I ever was, even when I was a young fool running around dungeons with an axe in one hand and stupidity in the other. He died in the fighting."
"I'm sorry. We lost a lot of good people that day." "That we did. That we did." He sighs. "His friend, a mage, came with the news. We drank together... Something stronger than tea... And she told me how my boy died. He charged straight at an ogre who was about to flank the spellcasters. Gurdek killed him, but died of his wounds." "Sounds like your son was a hero." |
VII. "He was a fool, like me," Yarbek says. "But a brave, goodhearted fool."
You speak of other things for some minutes, until the orc joins you at the table by the window and serves the tea. Its strong, spicy herbs warm your nostrils. And when you drink, that same warmth spreads throughout your body -- soothing flesh you hadn't even known was weary. "I'm afraid I've deceived you," he says. "I didn't just bring you here for tea." "Just remember, the castle's not built yet. If you poison me now, you won't be able to steal it." |
VIII. "I've heard you're a collector, %name%. Weapons, armor, artifacts..."
"Not by intent, but I've gathered a lot during my adventures." "They say you keep dangerous things safe, and put them to good use." "When I can." "Good. Then I have something to show you. After you've finished your tea." |
IX. Yarbek gazes out of the window while you drink. He waits for you to nod, before getting up and opening the door to a small chamber which opens off the main room.
"My son wore this in the battle." The pieces of a full panoply rest on an old table. Dark metal drinks the sunlight, which gleams on the points of vicious spikes. "And I think it killed him," Yarbek says. |
X. "It's cursed," the orc continues. "I stripped it off an enemy's corpse, back in my adventuring days, and our wizard examined it. Old, old magic, he called it. Enchantments that'd make an orc strong and fierce, but bring his doom as well. Idiot that I was, I ignored him and wore it. A hefty wound was my reward for stupidity. I don't know why I kept it... Maybe I couldn't bear to sell it and have it harm anyone else. More foolishness. If I'd got rid of it, Gurdek couldn't have taken it."
"I know a lot of clerics. One of them could cleanse it for you." He shakes his head. "Even if they can wipe the curse off like a stain, they couldn't wipe away the memories. I know this thing won't fit you. But a hero like you must know smiths and spellcasters who could work the magic metal and shape it. Please, take it. Let it do some good." |
