In the aftermath of the rising of the Abyssal Merfolk and their terrible overlords, West Kruna breathed a sigh of relief. The threat had been dealt with and many horrendous creatures sent back to the festering corners of the world from whence they came. However, there were still chitinous bodies stirring within the realm; the gigantic insects who were roused by their abyssal masters were not content to return to their homes. They had found food and temperate breeding grounds for their young, what reason did they have to return? They had forged a new home and much of West Kruna was ill equipped to deal with this new insectoid menace.
Bjorik, a Druid in the service of the Oaken Thorn Order, answered the call when the fighting broke out. Wizened and experienced by years of pursuing his craft and harmonizing with nature had prepared him for the abyssal invasion. Or so he thought.
He had employed every trick, every cantrip he knew. He even went so far as to delve into his alchemical knowledge but nothing seemed to work. As his friends fell to the overgrown mandibles of the gigantic insectoids he felt powerless to act.
Reaching out time and time again he tried to commune with the giant creatures to no avail. He had spent the better part of his life pursuing the druidic calling but something inside these creatures was too feral to be contained. He could no longer look upon these abominations of nature as anything other than gruesome pests.
Once the war was won, Bjorik retreated into the forests of his homeland with shame burdening his heart.
He bid farewell to those of his order that had survived the assault and set out deep into the forests of Tor'gyyl. He spent years in solitude, with only himself and his notes to keep him company. He gathered what supplies he could along the way and focused intently on his concoctions. He knew not what new paths lay before him, only that he must walk them as they presented themselves.
One day he sat among his makeshift lab within a shallow cavern. There was a nest of hornets that had taken up residence long before he arrived. He watched them intently, buzzing about and reached out with his mind. He could feel their life force humming in the air, he could see their heartbeats, feel their primitive and instinctual needs. He took a deep breath and got to his feet.
Bjorik approached the hive, slowly at first. Reaching out his hand he could feel the hive turn to him almost as one, angry and protective at first. He reached deep inside and felt that harmony he had labored so hard to find and extended his hand. Though he could not truly speak to these creatures he could ease their malcontent. One, a soldier, landed on his hand and buzzed in agitation. It did not bite nor sting, but seemed to be waiting for Bjorik.
Moving back to his lab, hornet in tow he set the creature down gently on his makeshift table. Taking a mixture of herbs and extracts he carefully dabbed small droplets onto the creature. He watched in anticipation as the hornet started cleaning its antenne and buzzing its wings. It started moving about his desk before finally flying off, back to the hive. Bjorik sighed in frustration and leaned back. He ate a simple meal and then leaned against the cavern wall in despair. Sleep came easily that night, his dreams full of buzzing.
He awoke with a startle. The hive was in a frenzy by the sounds of it and he rubbed the sleep from his eyes and lit a torch. Blinking in the dim light he shone the torch in the direction of the hive. On the floor lay the remains of a hornet, battered, broken and consumed in part. He shone the torch this way and that and his eyes went wide. Sitting upon the cave wall was a massive hornet, the size of a cat, it seemed to notice him for the first time and buzzed, not in anger but in greeting. Many other hornets buzzed in response. He surveyed the room and saw his herbs had been thrown about the cavern, consumed in pieces and finally his eyes landed upon her; the hornet queen.
He reached out, slowly, carefully, his heart beating fast. The queen did not stir, she simply sat there quietly as he approached. He rested his hand on her head gently and could feel her respond to him. Though there were no words he saw pictures in his mind's eye; pastures, larvae, food, people, simple images that told a simple story but Bjorik could not be more elated.
He responded back with images of his own, conveying the location of a giant mantis he had seen but one day prior. With a quickness he did not anticipate the hive buzzed in unison and many soldiers flew from the cavern swiftly. Startled, he fell backwards but the queen and remaining hornets did not seem to notice. He started writing notes within his journal as quickly as he could.
Slowly, drones returned with bits of food and materials and started assembling a new hive, one more suitable for creatures of their new size. As the hours passed by, Bjorik grew discouraged. He felt pride in his work, though he had broken some rules of his order, he no longer felt beholden to them and their old ways. But as he consoled himself, he heard a loud angry buzzing coming from the cavern entrance.
